I'm starting the research required to replace my ailing Microsoft MN700 router. I’ve been looking at various Linksys routers, even thinking about getting a combo router cable modem. I cam across this preview of the WRTSL54GS, a new router / NAS that they are coming out with. I think I might be able to find some use for hanging a big drive right on the LAN. Of course I’d also spring for an extended antenna to get a bit more range.

Why not get AirPort Express so that you can extend your wireless network easily AND hook up speakers and printers to it. Then you could stream music to anwhere in the house from any PC.

I thought you were all hot to get hardwired GigE at your new digs? Regardless, it's about time you replace your router, wasn't it ailing from the day you bought it?

sidenote: I read that linksys is using vxworks in some of their newer consumer routers so no more third party firmware from the linux hobbyist community. Yes, I know you don't care but others might.

I'd go GigE between the storage device (where all the DVDs are ripped) and the media center machine at the TV. Wi-Fi everywhere else.

VxWorks? Oh man, words fail me. I guess the hobbyists can still get a gcc compiler for it, so long as they don't use var_args.

Yeah hardwire between the office and the HTPC, Wi-fi everywhere else.

Also don't use VxWorks if you want to use socket select.

With iTunes now getting hooked into TV shows and the like, what about an AirPort Express with a video out jack? And what do you know a quick search shows rumors of just such a thing. For me watching TV and stuff on a new iMac is great, esp with the Front Row app, but I'd rather be able to watch it on my TV as well. An AirPort Express with video out would be super sweet.

To do it right they would have to extend the front row interface and remote to it.
