SageTV is a popular PC based Tivo competitor. Now it is taking on Windows media player. ExtremeTech puts it through its paces here.
Sage is a favorite of several of our readers. Its strongest features in my opinion, are that you don't have a monthly fee and that your TV is stored in easy to archive, DRM free Mpeg2 format. There are lessons here for both Tivo and Microsoft.
Here's the rumor regarding SageTv on linux I stumbled across:

John, January 4, 2005 02:51 PM:Hmm, I read the post and I would have to agree With the thoughts that a Linux only version would be oem only. While a While a public linux version might be Nice for the Community, from a business point of View the Support issues alone would kill you. In OEM mode you would be on a closed box where you could Control every thing. Besides Linux users don't pay for software.
George, January 6, 2005 12:39 PM:As rumored, the linux version of SageTV is oem only. SageTV also annnounced a $99 "media extender". No pictures or futher details, maybe it will be a SageTv version of the Hauppauge mediamvp.

John, January 6, 2005 01:53 PM:I read recently that HP is going to release a Linux based media center PC. Could this be using OEM sageTV?
George, January 13, 2005 11:43 AM:Sounds like sage will be working with smaller partners on the Linux version based on a post on the sage forums. As typical for SageTv, looks like the 3.0 Linux program will include the sage user community with a beta program that includes the opportunity to purchase an "early adopter version" which I think is really cool:
