Ever want to download more than 2 files at a time, but IE won't let you? Use Firefox! Type about:config in Firefox's address bar and adjust the following variable (by double-clicking on it) to something that makes you happy:
network.http.max-connections-per-server
I set mine to 8, but I hear it can go to 11.
I also noticed that the default settings of Firefox don't always get the freshest page. I had to 'ctrl-R' to get the latest page from a site occasionally, especially frequently updated blogs. The following tweak always gets the freshest page:
browser.cache.check_doc_frequency = 1
This variable can take the following values:
0 = check once per session
1 = check each time
2 = never check
3 = work out when to check from the info provided by the server.
Note that 3 is the default - anything higher than 3 is the same as 3, whatever the heck 'work out' means.
Good tip! I definitely am converted over to Firefox, but there is one main thing missing from IE. On pages that refresh automatically or have animated gifs in IE, you can click the stop button once to stop them from auto refresh or silence the animated gifs. In Firefox, the stop button is disabled after the page is loaded. This means that on forums there's no way to prevent all the little "sig" images from pulsing, or to keep the puget sound traffic site from reloading every minute...
john, December 24, 2004 10:04 PM:I'm not sticking up for IE, but in all fairness yoou can increase the number of concurent downlods here to. Its one of the first things I do when I get new machine. Its not very easy though. Crack open regedit and surf to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
Then, you create 2 new DWORD values:
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
MaxConnectionsPerServer
Set these to your desired value in hex.

J, January 3, 2005 11:38 PM:I think I commented about that one before on your tabbed browsers post. More are listed on the official site: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/tips
The main one is the "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" one. I tried the pipelining one a while ago and some sites wouldn't load so I turned it off. Let me know if you see problems.
If you like Firefox's Extensions feature there is a network extension you can grab that does some of what you said above and a few other things. I grabbed it and it's pretty nice.
"Tweak Network 1.0"
I went to update the max connections and it had already updated it to 16.
Another favorite extension is Adblock v.5 d2. It's excellent at blocking ads. Just right click on an ad that is on a page, select Adblock. It will show the URL so you can use wildcards and just block all adds from a specific server (i.e. www.blah.com/ads/*) it's amazing how many servers are set up this way so using the wildcard works wonders.
The FoxyTunes 1.0 extension is also very nice to use. I can control my music device from a small control panel on the bottom of the browser. And it has two buttins ^ and (down arrow) that instantly brings up the player or hides it which is nice when I want to change something on the player.
More Firefox tweaks:
Secrets of Firefox 1.0 - I ran across this one looking for a fix for the massive memory leaks in Firefox 1.0. I'll see if the tips work.
Optimized Firefox builds - You AMD64 boys need to d/l the optimized version and let me know if it's faster.
Another tweak to prevent flash-based pop-ups is described here.
