I of course can't confirm or deny these. The don't show off that much though. It would have be good to show the various file views, and search stuff etc. Also keep in mind when beta 1 hits the streets that it is still missing a lot of polish. I have seen some pretty cool UI trickery that I know didn't make it in Beta 1.
As for notepad.. it looks the same to me. I will say that my favorite feature, remote desktop, is getting a new feature - one that I've been looking for awhile now.

Apparently, "Vista" means "hen" in Latvian. At least I have chicken...
I'm not sure that I like the transparent edges. It doesn't really add anything except to say, "We can do transparent UI, too!".
John, July 27, 2005 05:27 PM:
Well it's not really transparent its glass. It's multiple layers ran through 2d filters and composted together. You can get a better feel for it when you are looking through two windows to the background. It's supposed to show off the new off wiz-bang UI graphics engine. But yeah, it doesn't really add functionality. There is a lot more 'cool' UI stuff coming for beta 2.
I have not read it yet, but it has something like 40 screen shots for the curious.

This might not be the right thread to post this, but I just read this on longhornblogs.com.
"Now, onto the browser window. I cannot stress this stongly enough. I ABHOR the tabbed browsing implementation. Having the tabs above the "File | Edit | View..." menu is terrible. And why would I have the address bar above the tab? Wouldn't it be below the tab?!?? ARRGH. My opinion: if you're gonna do tabs, don't interrupt the "File Edit View" menu paradigm everyone is already used to."
This doesn't make me warm and fuzzy about IE with tabs.
John, July 28, 2005 04:27 PM:
Well I guess some of these types of preferences are subjective. Having the file / edit /view below the tabs and the address bar is kinda a new thing. I'm not sure the reasoning behind it. The folder / explorer / search views in vista do this also. I can only speculate that they are putting a focus on navigating / where 'are you' over accessing lesser used features.
Also for the address bar location, I guess this is a matter of preference. I use 3 tabbed browsers and my address bar is ABOVE the tabs on all three. In fact I'm not sure what he is talking about. If you install firefox, is the address bar above or below the tabs?? He goes on to suggest that the tabs should be on the bottom of the browser, so again it's personal preference thing.
Paul, July 28, 2005 05:04 PM:
Tabs on the bottom of the browser is for people that love their mouse too much (i.e. retards). All your "action" buttons (home, back, forward, stop, quick links, bookmarks) are at the top. Tabs need to be at the top too, to prevent excess motion. I mean, that's just basic ergonomics.

When is Microsoft going to realize that everything they've ever done that really took off is based on copying what's already out there. The hubris over there is getting to people's heads and not letting them realize that they could simply copy verbatim the features they don't have and customers would be happy! Firefox has tabbed browsing... BANG IE has a tabbed browsing plugin. They could even release it under labs.microsoft.com like Google to pretend it was a "rogue" project. Sheesh. I'm ornery today.
John, July 28, 2005 05:51 PM:
Come on J that is just a cop out. You can't make a comment like everything they've ever done... Now you are just sounding like the slashdot crowd. That's just the kind of mind numbing sterotype thinking that gets humans into trouble all the time. :)
On a related topic. You know I was just thinking today about recent tech inventions that impacted my life. I would have to say that the mouse scroll wheel is right up there.
Paul, July 28, 2005 09:36 PM:
What I think would be cool would be rearrangeable tabs. Visual Studio has them, so the code is already written.
John, July 29, 2005 03:47 PM:
This is pretty funny, I just saw and email come across an internal mail list on this I.e. 7.0 topic. I can't post it here, but I'll give you the gist: "Hey how come I have this wierd bar at the top and I can't move it? Why is the file menu down lower?"
J, July 29, 2005 10:54 PM:
I told you I was ornery. :-)

I'm... so... ronery, so ronery, so ronery and sad real row...

7 editions of Vista? Uh oh, looks like Microsoft is falling under my rule of confusing products! Remember when there were like 18 varieties of Apple Performas? Or when the NVidia 5200 was actually much slower than the 4200. When the marketing guys can't even get the product naming to make sense - you know you're in trouble.
Paul, September 11, 2005 12:50 AM:
There is also an 8th version called "Windows Vista Ultimate Extreme Edition", aka "Mac OS X".
Do you know of any good, public screen shots? How is notepad coming along? That is my personal benchmark, as you know.
I like "Vista" better than the blander "Windows Server Edition 2003". It sounds like a consumer product.
Ok here are some screen shots that claim to be of a recent build.

More (official) screen shots at Microsoft PressPass.
