Cool Tech

Firefox 1.0.1 is out now, so go download it!

It's almost like the old days (1994-1995) when everyone rushed to download the latest point release of Netscape Navigator... software that is fun to use! It's seems like it has been ages since you could get excited about really great software.

I'm now adding Picasa 2 and Google Maps as a full time members to my list of Brilliant Code, they're that good.

Playing around with Picasa2 last night I found a little effect called "Filtered B&W". OMG, this is so cool. With a film camera, to get certain effects when shooting with B&W film you place a colored filter in front of the lens. A red filter will make things that are red really dark gray. A green filter will make things that are green darker. You can also use filters to tweak the image further in the dark room, so it's as if you're stacking the filter's effects. Not combining the filter's colors but stacking the effects though multi-stage processing. In a dark room this is very time consuming.

Ok, now, take a color image in Picasa2 and apply the Filtered B&W effect. BOOM you get to select colored filters (some classic preset colors or select from a pallete). Apply a green filter, then do it again to stack on a red filter.

In Photoshop I discovered how to do this from the back of an expensive Magazine for graphic designers and it took an entire page to tell me how to do it in Photoshop. It was a huge pain to do this in Photoshop. However this functionality was the main reason for me sticking with Photoshop.

But now Picasa2 has the same feature, it's easier to use by about 100 times, the results are better and it's free.

I was reading that some people were seeing the new browser crash if it was installed over an existing 1.0 installation and a query was typed in the url bar. Might want to hold off on it for now...

I installed over 1.0, and haven't seen any problems (yet).

So is that memory leak fixed with this new version?

I haven't tried yet. I'm worried about the other bugs mentioned on arstechnica. I'm OK with the state saving extension and just restarting for now.

Anyone tried FireTune? Let me know if you see a speed improvement; my main machine is still hosed.
